If you want your child to have a cavity-free smile, you need to start by reducing the amount of sugar your child consumes. This might be a difficult task, especially because sugary treats are delicious. So, to help you save your child’s smile, our dentist, Dr. Tayo Ogunsola, encourages you to use our tips.
First, you should provide more foods that don’t have as much sugar. This means you should stick to the basics, like meats, fruits, and vegetables. These foods don’t have high amounts of sugar and they can help satisfy your child’s hunger. So, to make this tip easier, you can stock your refrigerator and pantry with more healthy foods and treats and get rid of the tempting items.
Second, you should make healthier snacks. This doesn’t mean you should stop making your child’s favorite dessert, treat, or snack. All it means is that you should try to use different ingredients. You can substitute sugar with other things, like honey, artificial sweetener, or even nectar. If this isn’t possible, try using less sugar than what the recipe calls for.
Third, you should give your child sugar on occasion—not all the time. So, save the treats for the birthdays, anniversaries, and first days of school. However, it might be tough to limit treats this much, so try to make a goal for yourself, like to only give your child a sugary treat once a week.
