If you want a straight, healthy, and beautiful smile for a lifetime, you need to wear and care for your retainer. If you care for your appliance, it will care for you. So, to help you keep it in tip-top shape, our orthodontist, Dr. Tayo Ogunsola, encourages you to clean your retainer regularly. To help you do so, he is happy to share some cleaning instructions with you.

Make sure to clean your retainer immediately after you take it out of your mouth. If you wait to clean it, the plaque and other debris can harden on the appliance, making it difficult to remove them and completely clean the retainer. When you take the retainer out of the mouth, soak it in denture or retainer cleaner. This will help keep your retainer clean and it will make it taste and smell better the next time you put it in your mouth.

If you notice that the plaque has hardened and built up on your retainer, you should remove it with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Plaque is a white, sticky, hard-to-remove film. As you scrub, make sure to use mild dish soap or water. Do not use toothpaste. Toothpaste has abrasives that can scratch the appliance.

If you follow these instructions, you can be on your way toward the top-notch retainer you need!
