A filling is often used to repair a tooth afflicted with a modest-sized cavity or a small chip in a non-essential area. The passage of time and poor oral hygiene practices increase the chances of bacteria exploiting the surrounding tooth enamel. This can gradually weaken the dental adhesive bond holding the filling to the healthy enamel.

In time, a new cavity can form within the tooth or the filling could fall out. For a tooth in this condition, Dr. Tayo Ogunsola might recommend treatment with a dental crown.

This method of treatment will replace the entire tooth enamel layer of the affected tooth with a porcelain, gold, or metallic replica. The interior of the crown is hollow so it can be anchored on a post-like abutment that is formed from the core structures of the tooth.

Dr. Tayo Ogunsola will examine the tooth to assess the severity of the decay before numbing it with an injection of Novocain in the local gum tissues. Then, he will use a drill to remove the entirety of the tooth enamel. This leaves behind a post-like abutment of dentin that encases the pulp and root of the tooth.

A detailed impression will be made of the area. This will be sent to our dental lab where the new crown will be made. Then a temporary crown made from hard plastic will be secured over the abutment to protect it.

A member of the staff will call you to schedule a brief second appointment when the crown is ready. This appointment will be brief as the temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented onto the abutment.
